WHAT IS CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE (CKD)
Kidney disease (also called renal disease) is a general term for when the kidneys are damaged and don’t function as they should. If kidney damage happens quickly and the kidneys recover, for example from an accident or infection, it is called acute kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) refers to all kidney conditions where a person has evidence of kidney damage and/or reduced kidney function that lasts for three months or more. There are five recognised CKD stages. Stage 1 is the mildest form, gradually progressing through to stage 5 also known as end stage kidney disease (ESKD).
